When first introduced 20 years ago Car and Driver Magazine stated "The SL65 AMG is the most powerful production Roadster in the world with 1/4 mile times in the 11's @ 123 mph trap speed and top speed of 210 mph." These were impressive numbers at the time, still are, especially for an elegant and refined beauty that weighs in at about 4500 lbs. The 2006 model has one of the most powerful engines Mercedes Benz ever built, the hand-built 6.0 liter twin- turbocharged V12, 612 HP, 750 lb-ft torque Beast. The SL65 has the full AMG treatment with an aggressive body that includes a front bumper with a wider mouth that accommodates larger intercoolers for the SOHC 36-valve V-12, aluminum block and heads with port fuel injection. There is also a rich, deep-throated free-flowing exhaust that actually sounds like a turbocharged V-12. It has 19" wheels filled by 15.4 inch rotors clamped by enormous eight-piston calipers up front and 14.2 inch rotors with 4 piston calipers. The SL65's brakes have deep reserves that stop the 4500 pound roadster from 70 mph in 160 feet. The transmission is a 5-speed automatic with manumatic shifting. The brakes give no hint of fade and inspire confidence when you kick the pedal at 145 mph. Punch the throttle on the road, and you'll fly by the cars next to you and reach the cars ahead of you instantly. In the corners the SL65 displays safe handling due to the Active Body Control that levels the suspension to keep the car flat. There is plenty of grip as displayed by the 0.93 g achieved on the skidpad but it's strength is straight-line supremacy. After you drive the SL65 AMG, every car will feel underpowered. The Specs are without a doubt impressive but what I fell in love with was the secure feeling and driving experience of such a powerful, sophisticated and stunning convertible. I live in Biloxi MS where we have a 26 mile stretch of unobstructed Gulf of Mexico white sand beach, mild winters and 14 world class casinos. This exotic World Supercar turns heads wherever you go. I'm the 2nd owner of this fine lady. The first owner had it for 8 months. The stories you hear about powerful Mercedes needing regular maintenance and occasional repairs are true. Just like a good marriage, taking care of business leads to a beautiful relationship. I have pampered this lady and have recent Carfax report showing no accidents and regular maintenance with all records to attest. It breaks my heart to let her go but I must. My wife says I have to grow up. I'm 76 1/2 and the Peter Pan tattoo on my ankle is fading and looks like a bruise. My baby needs a younger man who appreciates her.
